Farmington Ohio History

Miscellanious

Here you will find tidbits regarding Farmington Ohio's History. Some census stuff, old letters, and any other miscellanious information I come across.

New information regarding the proposed CLINTON RR that was to run through West Farmington.

(Much appreciation to Mr. Stevens for supplying this information.)

"The book contains several paragraphs on the Clinton Air Line, which I'll try to summarize: It was incorporated in 1853 by a son of DeWitt Clinton (governor of NY and chief promoter of the Erie Canal), and $5 million was spent on it before work was stopped during a financial panic in 1857.  According to Harry, over 200 miles were graded, although he doesn't say where, or whether this was only what they did in Ohio. The company headquarters were in Hudson, Ohio, and there is a Clinton St. there.   After 1857 there were various abortive schemes to use the right-of-ways -- "The Continental," "The American," "The Gibson Road," "The United States Railroad," and "The 42nd Parallel," none of which, of course, ever did anything.  Harry says that the Nickel Plate used the Clinton grade between the Indiana state line and Arcadia, Ohio.

He also includes a couple of paragraphs tracing the grading, which will be no help to you since he starts at the ex-PRR station in Hudson and goes eastward to the Trumbull County line east of Parkman.  The route, by the way, wasn't truly an "air line" -- it had curves and changed direction several times within Ohio."

At one of the entries in the forum there is an attachment of a map of the route of the Clinton Air Line across Ohio.  It looks as if it would fall about where the route is indicated on the Farmington map."

Thanks again Mr. Stevens for the added information on the Clinton Air Line.
